Roller Blading or Roller Skating – Which is Easier?
Many people want to know what is easier – roller
blading or roller skating?
Most people imagine quad roller skates to be easier
to train on as compared to inline skates, or roller blades, the truth is that
many people, including children, find inline skates to be really easy.
If you've not tried inline skates thinking it would
be too hard, read on.
Stability
While roller skates have a wider base, the roller
skate plate is short and extends from just under the toe to the heel. This can cause
forward and backward falls while the skater is learning.
It may also result in wheel clipping (the wheels on
one skate may clip the wheels on the other skate), causing a fall. While learning
to quad roller skate, it is important keep the feet separate, which can be
difficult for children, who have such little legs!
On the other hand, inline skates have a longer frame
(past the toes and behind the heel). This makes them stable and less vulnerable
to wheel clipping.
Stopping
Most inline skates come with a high ankle that
supports the ankle and a heel brake is either fitted or can be installed. This
makes stopping easy. All you have to do is gently extend the foot upwards and
the heel brake pad engages with the ground, bringing the skater to a stop.
Quad skates usually do not come with a heel brake
but have toe stops. To use these toe stops, you have to drag one toe behind or
turn around and engage them whilst backwards. This could be more difficult than
the heel brake on the inline skates.
Balance
Inline skates require ankle strength since balancing on a single line of wheels exerts pressure on your ankles and feet.
Both inline skates and quad roller skates are tough at first because they require balance, and core and leg strength.
With practice, you can build the muscle strength and any skating will become a lot easier.
If you're still confused, check out your local rink and try both types because everyone is different.
