Tips for Safe Skating

The motto “Safety first” is essential to skating. Skating is fun but like any other physical activity, not following the ‘safety first’ mindset can get you hurt. Here are the most important safety tips for roller skating.

Skating Rink Etiquette

Skating indoors at a rink is fun, with an opportunity to show off your best moves to fellow skaters. However, you need to observe some basic rink etiquette.

Mind the flow of traffic. Go with the flow of traffic at the rink. Don’t try to go clockwise if everyone else is skating counterclockwise.

Mind the zones. The rink has zones. Usually, skaters who are practicing skating or tricks stay in the inner zone. The outer zones are like traffic lanes, with people skating laps.

Don’t cut across. Do not try to cut across the zones from the outside to the center or vice versa. If you want to make your way against the flow, do so slowly. Don’t stop abruptly otherwise you would get run into by another skater.

Get up quickly and safely, if you fall. Do not put your hands down flat on the skating rink. To get up safely, place your palms on your thighs and push yourself up to your knees, and then stand fully.

Be mindful of other people. If you’re skating at a fast pace or trying a new trick, be mindful of others on the rink, especially kids or less-experienced skaters.

Wear protective gear. It’s a good idea to wear protective gear, especially if you’re skating outdoors.

Be Mindful of your Surroundings

Skating around the neighborhood or the park allows you to enjoy the outdoors, but you need to be cautious about where you skate. Avoid any areas where there is –

        high traffic

        bumpy or uneven paving

        sharp drop-offs

Check the weather before you leave and take appropriate measures, such as sunscreen, water bottle, etc.

Skating is the most fun form of exercise if you keep the ‘safety first’ mindset.
