Beginners Skating Reference Guide
If you have recently decided to learn to skate and made a few attempts but it seems difficult for you to learn, you may start wondering whether you can skate at all.
Our advice is to not give up just yet!
A skater must be able to –
- to walk with an upright posture.
- to kneel down and tie own shoelaces and stand up from that position
Skating is very different from any other thing that your
body does. Wheels on your feet change everything. When you are on skates and it
is a new experience, the body is very confused trying to feel balanced and safe.
Till the body grows accustomed to the feeling and learns to balance, it will
feel scared, and anxious, simply because of the risk of injury and pain.
In skating, you need specific movements to skate and to stop, in a systematic and progressive way. Recall when you learned to drive a car. In the beginning, it can be overwhelming with so many things to think about. But practice makes those movements automatic, to the extent that you can drive without even thinking about it. The same is true for skating. But bad habits can develop quickly and that’s why it’s important to learn right from the start. Read on to learn more about the skills you need as a beginner.
Here are the skills beginners need –
- Doing up skates correctly
- Using protective gear properly and practicing to fall forwards onto the gear and not backward
- The static practice of different positions on grass or carpet
- Finding your balance in each position
- The static practice of the basic stride movement on grass
- Basic movement in a controlled, slow velocity setting
- Heel Braking
Skating requires a great deal of focus to replicate
the correct techniques in each moment, but this focus helps you take your mind
off your worries and puts you in a happy zone. Skating is a unique sport that
has the ability to help you improve your mental health too, in addition to the
amazing physical benefits.
You can and should learn skating. But expecting to
do it right in one go, without learning and practicing, is the road to certain disappointment,
and even failure.
Keep the above-mentioned factors in your mind as you learn. As you start overcoming challenges with the right practice, you will feel the joy you are looking for and a wonderful sense of accomplishment. Skating offers many such brilliant gifts in the initial months of learning and even later, as you learn to master new tricks.
